Jakarta, November 1, 2024 – Indomilk, Indonesia's leading milk brand from PT Indolakto subsidiary of PT Indofood CBP Sukses Makmur Tbk (ICBP), is proud to serve as the official milk sponsor of Jakarta Coffee Week 2024, taking place from November 1-3. This participation is part of the concluding series of events for Indomilk Coffeepreneur - a program now in its third year, which incorporates creative economy principles by offering sustainability training to micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
Now in its third year, the Indomilk Coffeepreneur program is collaborating with Tetra Pak, a world leading in food processing and packaging solutions company, to promote a sustainability initiative that encourages entrepreneurs and café owners to sort and recycle used milk cartons. This effort aims to reduce environmental impact while fostering responsible practices. By repurposing milk cartons, the initiative brings both environmental and economic benefits to communities, supports national recycling goals, and advances the circular economy within Indonesia's coffee industry.
Indomilk, a brand with over 50 years in the Indonesian market, offers Indomilk Good Milk UHT Full Cream without added sugar - a high-quality milk with a creamy taste and long-lasting texture. Good Milk UHT Full Cream is the perfect milk for cold coffee drinks and easy to froth for hot coffee, it provides an excellent solution for coffee business owners with limited storage or access to fresh milk products.
Tjatur Budi Lestijaman, General Manager of Research and Development at Indolakto, said, “We are committed to supporting Indonesia's coffee industry and reducing our environmental footprint through responsible production practices, sustainable packaging, and recycling initiatives. The Coffeepreneur program and our partnership with Tetra Pak strengthen the commitment, allowing us to drive positive change toward a greener future while meeting the rising consumer demand for sustainable products.”
The global coffee industry, marked by high consumption of single-use packaging, is under growing pressure to adopt more sustainable practices. As consumption rises, so does the need for businesses to address the waste they produce. Through recycling initiatives like this, Tetra Pak and Indolakto are at the forefront of reducing the coffee industry’s environmental impact while emphasizing the importance of embedding sustainability into business operations.
Meanwhile, Tommy Srihartoyo, Sales Director of Tetra Pak, said, “Achieving a sustainable future for food packaging requires a full value chain approach to circularity. Collaborating with key stakeholders like our customers is important to reaching this goal. Our partnership with Indolakto is a strategic step by Tetra Pak to raise awareness of carton collection and recycling, while also supporting Indolakto in achieving their sustainability targets.”
“Tetra Pak’s packaging solutions, made from paperboard, plastic, and aluminum, are designed to protect products while being fully recyclable in markets with proper collection, sorting, and recycling systems. Once used cartons are collected and placed in recycling bins, they go through a process that separates their components, which are then repurposed into valuable new products, supporting a low-carbon economy,” Tommy added.
Through the Coffeepreneur program, Tetra Pak and Indomilk are promoting the collection and recycling of cardboard packaging. Began as a pilot program in Malang in 2023, with plans to expand to other cities across Indonesia in the future.
“Initiatives like this are essential to changing how we approach packaging waste in the coffee industry. By focusing on recycling, we can significantly reduce the environmental impact of popular products like coffee. This program, initiated by Indolakto and Tetra Pak, has encouraged us in the coffee industry to gradually adopt better practices in managing milk carton waste. Through the Coffeepreneur program, we’ve added value by repurposing thousands of used milk cartons,” said Afif, a business owner and coffee shop owner in Malang.
As part of the partnership, Indomilk and Tetra Pak will host a talk show on November 2nd at Jakarta Coffee Week. The segment will focus on “DIY Upcycling Milk Cartons” and will feature Evani Jesslyn, an Indonesian coffee activist and founder of Coffee Academy. “Coffee has become a popular drink among various groups in Indonesia. With the increase in coffee consumption, especially drinks made with packaged milk, there has also been a rise in milk carton waste. I appreciate the steps taken by Indomilk and Tetra Pak to provide recycling education as part of the Coffeepreneur program. This initiative encourages us as coffee industry players to be more environmentally conscious and work together towards a sustainable planet,” said Jesslyn.
