Fire Control and Haze Prevention

Fire control is vital to limit the impacts of forest fires on our operations and the wider community. All sites and those of our suppliers must comply with our zero-burning requirement as set out in the Sustainable Agriculture Policy. All land clearing, for example, of non-productive oil palms must be done mechanically, and good practices are shared with the smallholders and surrounding communities.

Our Agribusiness Group monitors fire risk ‘hotspots’ using satellite imagery and engages with stakeholders on fire prevention. On-the-ground checks are conducted by our estate managers and specialist fire teams to verify local risk. The Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) team, estate managers, and specialist fire teams are in constant contact, enabling swift and decisive responses to manage fire risks. Our fire control teams and fire specialists complete regular training in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, the military, police, and the Local Government.
