Community Engagement in Protecting the Environment

Indofood actively engages with Government, local communities and NGOs to protect the environment through various initiatives. These include the Indofood Waste Bank program and other ongoing partnership programs, such as the Mangrove Ecosystem Restoration Alliance (MERA) Project. More details on these programs are provided under Environmental Stewardship section in our Sustainability Report.

A Clean Ciliwung Movement
The Clean Ciliwung Movement (Gerakan Ciliwung Bersih or GCB) is one of the many environmental preservation initiatives in which Indofood is actively participating. Stakeholders, including the Government, educational institutions, corporations, and community organizations who are a part of the Ciliwung River Caring Community (Komunitas Peduli Ciliwung or KPC), shared a commitment to develop this initiative in 1989. The GCB serves as a platform for increasing public understanding of the value of protecting the Ciliwung River Basin (Daerah Aliran Sungai or DAS). GCB has played a role in the development of KPC from upstream to downstream, where as many as 30 communities have been formed along the Ciliwung river.

The initiative aims to enhance the river's capacity to provide clean water for Jakarta’s residents and to reduce hydrometeorological disasters. This series of programs includes knowledge and information development, Ciliwung ecotourism and education, waste recycling through River Waste Processing Site (Tempat Olah Sampah Sungai or TOSS) technology, Ciliwung river school, urban farming development, and commemoration of various days for the environment.

To enable the community to separate waste at the source using TOSS, GCB continuously engages in outreach and education activities. TOSS is a community-based waste management and processing method using fermentation technology. Implementation of good waste management practices can result in a valuable source of raw materials for energy generation and can further support the growth of a circular economy while reducing the volume of waste created.
